THE VIEW FROM THE CD’S WINDSHIELD by Lee Fortier, Chapter Director It is hard to believe that our Chapter Christmas Party is only about 13 weeks away; Thanksgiving will soon be upon us; and can you believe that some retail stores are already putting out Christmas stuff? In other words, 2008 will soon be just a memory. |
|
However, some of those memories will linger for a lifetime; like how I felt after participating in our first Ride for Kids (unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable), or driving on the track at Bristol Motor Speedway (Wow!), or returning from a two-wheeled dinner ride in Virginia on Rt. 17 in the middle of a horrendous lightning storm (I did laundry the next morning). I know (hope) that each of you has also experienced something memorable this year as a result of your participation in Goldwing … let’s cherish those memories. The close of 2008 also means that Sandy and I will have been the Chapter Directors for a year. This means that it is time to begin the process of succession planning, thinking about who the staff will be for 2009, thinking about who might want to step up into a leadership position within the Chapter. A volunteer organization such as ours can only be successful if people keep stepping forward, if people are willing to give of their time and efforts to maintain or improve an organization. I guess this is really a call for interested people to step forward. Who “might” want to become the Chapter Director? The Asst. Chapter Director? The Rider Educator? Couple of the Year? Ride Coordinator? Activities Coordinator? Ways & Means Coordinator? Secretary? Etc. We are fortunate to have both current members and new members, and former members who appear to be returning to the fold. I would encourage each of you to consider the possibility of applying for a position on the staff, and we can then work together to match skill sets with openings and create an awesome staff for 2009 and beyond. Please let me know at 252-426-1878 or at doceducation@mchsi.com if you are interested in becoming a member of our 2009 River city Wings Staff. Finally, I have started to see some leaves in my yard, and while most are storm damage, a few appear to have fallen on their own. This coincides with an article I just read about the danger that motorcycles face from wet or damp leaves on the road, and especially in shaded areas. In between those times when it is too hot or too cold, let’s watch out for those damp leaves in the turns and shaded twisties. Let’s be careful out there. Lee |
